Due to an April chemical spill, about 1,000 feet of sewer line on McJunkin Road in Nitro will need to be replaced, according to the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection.

Terry Fletcher, a spokesperson with the DEP, said in email about 5,400 gallons of the material Mondur MR Light spilled from a trailer at , 418 Independent Ave. in Nitro.
The material is used to manufacture polyurethane products such as foams, coatings, adhesives and sealants, according to Fletcher.
According to the website of the material’s manufacturer, the material is harmful if inhaled and can cause skin or respiratory irritation.
Fletcher said the spill occurred on private property in an area not readily accessible to the public and the DEP “is not aware of the material reaching state waters.â€
Spread of spill
The DEP responded to the incident, and Service Transport hired a contractor to clean up the spill.
“Initial observations indicated that the material was fully contained and did not migrate off-site,†Fletcher said.
However, the product was discovered in the sewer line on McJunkin Road on April 30.
The product had hardened and caused another spill in the parking lot of REO Logistics, located on 6 McJunkin Road.

Temporary toilets
About seven to eight portable toilets and three mobile restroom trailers have been placed at the REO Logistics building, which houses other businesses, as well.
The West Virginia Division of Rehabilitation Services building, 10 McJunkin Road, is connected to REO Logistics.
Some employees are working from alternate locations at their request, and operations continue to function normally, said Andy Malinoski, spokesperson for the division.
What’s next
A replacement sewer line is being planned between the City of Nitro and Service Transport’s attorneys.
Nitro Mayor Dave Casebolt did not respond to a request for comment. The Gazette-Mail was told he was not speaking on the advice of attorneys.
Service Transport did not return a request for comment.
