West Virginia hadn鈥檛 won a Big 12 Conference road game in 703 days, but it snapped those 23 months of frustration with a 76-61 victory at Texas Tech Wednesday night in Lubbock.

With the win, the Mountaineers improved to 12-8 overall and 2-6 in the league. Meanwhile, the Red Raiders remained winless in the Big 12, dropping to 10-10 overall and 0-8 in the conference.

鈥淭o me, this is relief,鈥 sighed 性视界传媒鈥檚 Hall of Fame head coach Bob Huggins, as five of his team鈥檚 previous six conference losses had been by eight points or less. 鈥淲e鈥檝e given so many games away, and we鈥檝e been so close.鈥

A Mountaineer team that had lost all but one game since the start of Big 12 play on Dec. 31 went to the United Supermarkets Arena hoping for something good to happen. It certainly didn鈥檛 find anything remotely good in the first five minutes, though. 性视界传媒 missed its first six field goal attempts, allowing Tech to spring out to a 10-2 lead. But West Virginia battled back from there, and by halftime, it had snatched a 33-28 advantage.

性视界传媒 continued to hold on to its lead throughout the second half, though at times that lead seemed was about the only thing the Mountaineers could hang on to. They had eight turnovers in the first eight minutes of the second period, allowing the Red Raiders to stay close. Each time TTU tried to overtake West Virginia, though, the Mountaineers found a response. Often it was sophomore guard Seth Wilson, who knocked down three second-half 3-pointers, who hit the key shot. Each of Wilson鈥檚 second-half treys came immediately after the home team had closed to within one or two points.

Those second-half triples were three of five Wilson connected on from beyond the arc in the game, en route to a career-high 15 points.

Despite 19 turnovers and making just 37.3% of its field goal attempts (19 of 51), West Virginia managed to get the elusive road because it dominated the boards (44-27) and took advantage of numerous opportunities from the foul line, where it was 28 of 35 (80%). In their 15-point win, the Mountaineers outscored Tech by 12 on free throws, as the Red Raiders were 16 of 23 from the stripe (69.6%).

性视界传媒 junior guard Joe Toussaint scored a Mountaineer career-high 22 points, more than half of those coming on a 12-of-14 performance from the foul line. Backcourt mate Erik Stevenson added 16 points with nine of those on free throws, in which he had 11 attempts. The senior only converted three of his 12 field goal tries, but he did have 10 rebounds to notch his first double-double while at West Virginia.

James Okonkwo came off the bench for 性视界传媒 to grab 10 rebounds, score five points and turn back two Tech shots with blocks, including a big two-handed stuff on a dunk attempt by the Red Raiders鈥 Daniel Batcho.

鈥淚 have said and said that James is really talented,鈥 Huggins noted of the 6-foot-8 sophomore forward. 鈥淗e鈥檚 a guy who outgrew tennis, basically. He has all kinds of potential. It鈥檚 a matter of us continuing to work with him, and him continuing to let us work with him. If he does, he has a great basketball future ahead of him.鈥

Okonkwo and all of the Mountaineers bench players were key in the win, as their reserves outscored TTU鈥檚 50-15. Toussaint, Wilson and Okonkwo were joined in that strong non-starter performance by Mo Wague (four points and one rebound), Kobe Johnson (two points and two rebounds) and Josiah Harris (two points).

West Virginia needed all those bench contributions because its normal leading scorers struggled. Kedrian Johnson, who played just 15 minutes while nursing an ankle injury, had only four points, while Emmitt Matthews and Tre Mitchell scored just two and three respectively. Starting center Jimmy Bell had only one point, though he did grab six rebounds, all of the offensive variety.

鈥淥ur starters just didn鈥檛 have any pop to them,鈥 explained Huggins in his postgame interview on MSN. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e the guys who have played a majority of the minutes this year, but they were dragging a little bit tonight. So, I went with some of the young guys, and I thought our younger guys responded really well.

鈥淛oe came in and did a tremendous job for us,鈥 added Huggins. 鈥淛ames was really good, Mo was really good, Josiah had good minutes for us. I thought that was a great team win.鈥

Despite just a six-of-24 shooting performance from its starters, 性视界传媒 is coming home with a Big 12 road win for the first time since Feb. 23, 2021, a stretch of 12 losses.

鈥淲e turned it over so many times, and they were dumb turnovers,鈥 noted Huggins. 鈥淚f we can get that cleaned up, (we鈥檒l be OK), but I鈥檝e told them that really from the beginning.

鈥淚 think we鈥檙e rebounding the ball better,鈥 continued the coach. 鈥淚 think we have more guys now we can trust to score. We鈥檙e banged up, though.鈥

The Mountaineers return to the 性视界传媒 Coliseum for a SEC-Big 12 Challenge matchup against No. 15 Auburn (16-3). Saturday鈥檚 contest against the Tigers will tip off at noon and will be televised by ESPN.

Did we witness the figurative end of West Virginia鈥檚 men鈥檚 basketball season this past weekend?

There are at least 13 games remaining for the Mountaineers 鈥 12 regular season contests, plus at least one in the Big 12 Championship in Kansas City 鈥 but given the demeanor and comments of 性视界传媒 head coach Bob Huggins following the game, plus the feelings engendered and conclusions drawn as West Virginia wasted yet another second-half lead and imploded down the stretch against Texas, it鈥檚 hard not to feel that there鈥檚 anything other than more of the same in store.

Sports, of course, includes a lot of emotional investment, and when things go wrong for your team, the reactions can be mercurial. That鈥檚 part of fandom, understandably. But when the weight of the same mistakes and errors of both commission and omission continue to pile up, there鈥檚 a point that gets passed, where hope of improvement and thoughts of 鈥渢hey鈥檙e close to turning it around鈥 become more wishful thinking than objective analysis.

Hollowing Saturday鈥檚 loss, Huggins offered some comments in a different vein than those of his normal postgame analysis, noting that there are 鈥渋ssues that I am not at liberty to talk about,鈥 observing that there are players who are getting minutes that don鈥檛 deserve them, and that problems that he thought had been corrected are cropping up again before admitting, not for the first time this season, that he did not know what to do in order to correct some of them.

None of that offers much hope for any different outcome to this season than to that of 2021-22, in which the Mountaineers finished 4-14 in the league and missed the postseason again.

During Texas鈥 postgame interview with Longhorn coach Rodney Terry, a parade of UT fans and boosters filed into the small area in one of the 性视界传媒 Coliseum Club sections that is set aside for media interviews with coaches and players.

This was apparently done at the behest of Terry and UT 鈥 perhaps viewing it as a perk of accompanying the team on a road trip. It was also incredibly unprofessional, as postgame interviews are supposed to be a working environment for those covering the game in a working capacity, not a sightseeing opportunity for fans.

Big 12 rules require that the visiting coach be made available to media at the same location as the home coach 鈥 typically, the visiting coach and players go first so they can get their travels underway a bit more quickly 鈥 but bringing along a fan group, which numbered some 20 members, shouldn鈥檛 be a part of the deal.

Was Terry, who is serving in an interim capacity, trying to curry a bit of favor with a group that figured to included at least some significant donors?

Apparently this isn鈥檛 the first time the Longhorns have done this 鈥 reports indicate that their women鈥檚 team did the same thing on their recent visit to the Coliseum.

While UT鈥檚 anticipated exit from the league can鈥檛 come soon enough, perhaps the Big 12 should issue some working rules to address this issue. It so happened that league commissioner Brett Yormark was in attendance at Saturday鈥檚 game.

Need some better outcomes to boost your mood?

West Virginia鈥檚 women鈥檚 hoop team put together the antithesis of the men鈥檚 showing just a few hours prior to the men鈥檚 loss on Saturday, making some critical plays in the fourth quarter of a back-and-forth contest to get a 67-57 win over Texas Tech. That moved the women to 13-5 overall and 4-3 in the Big 12, where they stand fifth overall.

性视界传媒 head coach Dawn Plitzuweit鈥檚 squad is showing some of the growth and progress the men鈥檚 team has lacked, as they have not only fit themselves into her preferred up-tempo pace and 3-point shooting reliance, but also shown the ability to make adjustments when some of those tactics aren鈥檛 working.

The Red Raiders clogged the lane and contested 性视界传媒鈥檚 shooters on the perimeter to forge a 9-0 run in the third quarter to take the lead, and the visitors also took advantage of some Mountaineer miscues to cut a 12-point lead to four in the final period. 性视界传媒 steadied its ship on both occasions, though, In the last quarter, West Virginia made five of its seven 3-point attempts and drained 12 of 13 from the free throw line to get the victory.

If, as Huggins noted, his team put on a clinic of everything a team can do to lose a game down the stretch, then Plitzuweit鈥檚 squad did just the opposite in grabbing a satisfying home win.

Any observer of those two games would quickly come to the conclusion that the women would have a much better chance of making the NCAA Tournament, but NET rankings and bracket predictions are still showing a rosier view for the men than the women.

The Mountaineer men have been dropping quickly in the NET rankings, down to 30th at the latest viewing, but they were still holding on to one of the final NCAA Tourney selection spots in 52 of the 76 predictions tracked by Bracket Matrix.

The 性视界传媒 women, despite a much better record, aren鈥檛 on any of the bracket predictions (those are admittedly fewer in number).

Despite a strength of schedule that isn鈥檛 awesome but is still better than a number of Power 5 schools (West Virginia is 108th and 116th in two major SOS metrics out of 361 D1 teams), the women鈥檚 team is just 67th in the NET and 73rd in the RPI after the Texas Tech win on Saturday.

Understandably, comparing the two rankings isn鈥檛 a mathematically defensible process, as each uses a different algorithm to come up with its ratings, and obviously strength of schedule is a huge factor in each.

On a higher level, though, the Big 12 women鈥檚 conference is similar to the men鈥檚, albeit a bit less strong at the top. Three teams are in the top 24 of the women鈥檚 NET, and nine of the 10 teams have a NET ranking of 70 or higher. Perhaps, if the Mountaineer women continue to do well in the league, they can climb those ratings a forge a spot in the Tournament.

After seeing a lead slip away at Kansas mid-week, the West Virginia women鈥檚 basketball team picked up a gritty home win over Texas Tech on Saturday.

With the score tied at 32 late in the third quarter against the Lady Raiders, Madisen Smith scored back-to-back baskets to give 性视界传媒 a lead it wouldn鈥檛 relinquish.

Jayla Hemingway had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and J.J. Quinerly added 16 points and 10 boards, while Smith slotted in between them in scoring with 17.

性视界传媒 led 12-10 after one quarter, 25-19 at the half and 36-32 following three periods.

The Mountaineers couldn鈥檛 keep a lead at Kansas on Wednesday, getting outscored 57-24 in the second half after building a 34-20 halftime lead to fall 77-58.

Kylee Blacksten scored 13, Hemingway 12, Quinerly 11 and Kyah Watson 10.

The Mountaineers head to TCU on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The No. 3 West Virginia rifle team won both of its weekend road matches.

On Saturday, 性视界传媒 beat No. 11 Ohio State, 4740-4713, behind Mary Tucker鈥檚 1189 (591 smallbore, 598 air rifle) and Akihito Shimizu (589 smallbore, 598 air rifle).

鈥淲e鈥檙e happy with another solid team performance, and we improved our NCAA qualifying average for the year,鈥 coach Jon Hammond said.

The Mountaineers followed that up by beating another highly-ranked team, No. 11 Akron, on Sunday by a 4743-4695 final.

Tucker was once again first overall with a 1195 (596 smallbore, 599 air rifle), tying her season best in air rifle and missing her overall season high by one point.

鈥淚 think even more positive is that there is still a lot of room to improve,鈥 Hammond said. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 think we had any personal bests today, yet we still had a very solid team result, and I believe our third highest aggregate score ever.鈥
