The state Division of Motor Vehicles that allows West Virginia residents to store driver’s licenses and other identification credentials on their mobile phones to verify their identities for airport security screening, age-restricted product purchases and other identify checks.
The app is designed to streamline interactions with government agencies, including Transportation Security Administration PreCheck Checkpoints, and various businesses and services.
The new West Virginia mID (mobile identification) program is currently in a testing phase. State officials said in a news release that the mID mobile app should be available by late December for free download from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

The app, designed to meet International Organization for Standardization standards for mobile driving licenses, offers West Virginia residents “an efficient and contactless alternative to physical IDs,†said Donnie Scott, CEO of IDEMIA Public Security North America. “It is also secure, as only mobile ID holders can unlock their app using their biometrics or a personal, six-digit PIN, ensuring exclusive access.â€
