(BPT) - Did you know there are an estimated one million cases of shingles in the United States each year? Shingles is a painful, blistering rash that can take weeks to clear up, interfering with life, work and sleep. In some cases, complications like long-lasting nerve pain, can develop. Nearly 99 percent of adults already have the virus that causes it, though not everyone will develop shingles. The immune system naturally declines as we get older, beginning around age 50, making people 50 years and older at increased risk of developing shingles.
Even if you feel healthy, you may still be at risk. In addition to age, certain health conditions, like diabetes, heart disease, chronic kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and asthma have been associated with an increased risk of shingles.
Cassandra, a former law enforcement officer, Laarni, a public health nurse, and Patricia, a retired mental health professional, each share their shingles experiences to raise awareness and educate others about their risk for developing it. If you are 50 years or older, you're at increased risk for certain vaccine-preventable diseases, like shingles. Talk to your local Kroger pharmacist about your risk and visit to find a pharmacy appointment near you.
